Kangs Run Wild in Crucial 7-1 Win

Sophomore Theo Alexander
had three of LW’s ten stolen bases.
Sporting high socks and a renewed focus, Lake Washington
started the second round of divisional play with a 7-1 win over Ballard. The win was key to the Kangs playoff hopes,
as it completed a sweep of the Beavers giving them the advantage in the case of
a tie at the end of the season.
The game started out as a pitcher’s duel, similar to the
first time the two teams met to kick off the KingCo regular season. Just as in the first game, seniors Trevor
Dunlap and Charlie Beaudoin were matching each other pitch for pitch. Ballard took a lead in the third inning on an
RBI single by Brandon Foor. LW avoided
further damage when Dunlap enduced a 6-4-3 double play with the bases loaded to
end the inning. In the fourth inning,
Bob Cruikshank finished off an 11-pitch at-bat with a run scoring double to
right-center field, tying the game at 1.
Beaudoin was forced to leave the game one batter later with a back
injury, which proved to be just what the doctor ordered for Lake Washington.
The fifth inning was key for the Kangs as they stole six
bases and scored four runs in the frame.
Junior Nori Shimizu’s RBI infield single broke the tie and senior Colin
Tremblay singled home two more runs to give LW a 4-1 lead. Junior Alex Donnelly’s double scored courtesy
runner Theo Alexander for the Kangs fifth run.
They would tack on two more in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Dunlap went the distance, scattering 8 hits and 3 walks while
striking out 3 to improve to 4-2 on the season.
Shimizu finished the night 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and fellow juniors Bob
Cruikshank and Wesley Russell each had two hits and a double. The Kangs finished the night with 10 stolen
bases, with Alexander (3) and Russell (2) leading the way. The win pulls LW into a tie for fourth place
with Ballard for the final playoff spot in the Crown Division. The final three game week of the season kicks
off Monday when the Kangs will travel to Lower Woodland for a 3:45 game at
Roosevelt.
