Big Inning Dooms Kangs in 9-6 Loss

Junior Kory Kohlwes had 2
hits on the day and is now 7-for-13 on the season.
An eight-run Garfield third inning proved too much to
overcome, as a late Kangs rally fell short in a 9-6 loss to the Bulldogs. Garfield scored 6 of the 8 runs in the frame
with two outs, using 5 singles, 3 doubles, a walk and an LW error to knock
starter Spencer Jackson out of the game and seemingly put the game out of
reach.
Garfield carried a 9-1 lead into the seventh inning when the
Kang bats came to life. Alex Donnelly
led off the inning with a single and scored on an RBI triple by Nori
Shimizu. Bob Cruikshank drove home
Shimizu with a groundout for the second run of the inning. Colin Tremblay doubled and was drove home by
a Chris Moore triple, making the score 9-4.
Following a walk to Kory Kohlwes, Phil Gray drove home Moore with a
groundout to cut the lead to 4. Three
consecutive singles by Trevor Dunlap, Joe Pitzler and Donnelly (his second hit
of the inning) got the tying run to first base.
Off the bat, it looked as if the Kangs would continue the rally, as Nori
Shimizu hit a hard ground ball down the third base line. However, Garfield was playing “no doubles”
defense, and the third baseman ran the ball to the bag for the final out.
Donnelly finished the game 3-for-5 with a double and
Cruikshank drove in two runs for Lake Washington, who falls to 4-4 in league
play with the loss. The Kangs start a
stretch of three straight games against the co-leaders in the Crest Division on
Wednesday night when they play host to Newport at Lee Johnson Field. Game time is 7:00 pm.
