Alex Donnelly staked the Kangs to an early lead with a 2-run HR.

Woodinville scored four unearned runs in the sixth inning to break a 4-4 tie, as the Falcons handed the Kangs their second straight loss, 8-4.  The game featured nearly an hour long lightning delay which forced both starting pitchers out of the game early.  Woodinville won a battle of the bullpens thanks to a combination of clutch hitting shaky Kangs defense.

Lake Washington took a 2-0 lead in the third inning when junior outfielder Alex Donnelly lined a 2-2 fastball over the right center field wall.  The blast was the first home run of the season for LW.  Woodinville scored a single run in the third on a Jake Dammrose triple which was lost in the lights, followed by an RBI single by sophomore Shea Donlin.  In the bottom of the fourth, Falcon pitcher Luke Taylor led off with a double.  That was followed by a bolt of lightning, forcing the teams to their dugouts for the next 45 minutes.  When play resumed, a one out walk and a double steal by the Falcons tied the game at 2.  LW jumped back ahead in the top of the fifth on RBI singles by Donnelly and fellow junior Bob Cruikshank.  The lead was short lived however, as Woodinville scored on another double steal and a passed ball to tie the game at 4.

The Kangs were retired in order in the top half of the sixth, setting the stage for Woodinville’s late rally.  Following a strikeout, the Kangs had the chance for the second out of the inning, but dropped a pop-up in foul territory.  The Falcons took advantage, as sophomore Spencer Greer lined the next pitch into the trees over the left field fence to break the tie.  Three more unearned runs later and the Falcons had all but put the game away.  The Kangs tried rallying, but a key double play killed the momentum and the game ended when Cruikshank flew out to the warning track in left-center field.

Sophomore Zach Johnson took the loss in relief for LW, allowing 6 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits and 3 walks over 2 2/3 innings.  Greer not only hit the game winning home run, but pitched the final three innings to pick up the win.  LW’s offense was led by Donnelly, who finished the day 2-for-4 with a home run, 3 RBI and 2 runs scored.  The Kangs will hope to get back in the win column when they travel to unbeaten Inglemoor on Friday night.
