3-Run Seventh Caps White Comeback

Box Score

Senior Chris Viltz was 2-3 with a triple and an RBI in a losing effort.

Junior Colin Tremblay stole third and scored the winning run on a throwing error, as White scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh for a come-from-behind 5-4 win.  Senior Eric Folkers started the rally with a double, and Tyler Staudacher and Tremblay followed with walks to load the bases.  Junior Phil Gray singled through the left side to plate Folkers and cut the lead to 1 at 4-3.  An attempted back pick of Staudacher at third trickled down the left field line, allowing the senior to score the tying run.  On the very next pitch, Gray and Tremblay stole second and third respectively.  Senior catcher Alex Ross tried to throw out Gray at second, but his throw sailed into center field, allowing Tremblay to score and providing an improbable finish to a hotly contested Varsity intrasquad.

Pitching ruled the day early on, as the game was tied at 2 through five innings.  For the White team, senior Karl Myers gave up an unearned run in two innings of work, and Staudacher followed with 3 strong innings, allowing 3 hits and a run while striking out 5.  For Purple, senior Christian Kaiser gave up 2 in the first before settling down to work a perfect second inning.  Senior Blake Lively relieved Kaiser and cruised through 3 2/3 innings, scattering 2 hits and a walk before hitting his pitch count.

Purple got to White junior reliever Trevor Dunlap in the top of the sixth, scoring twice on back-to-back two-out extra base hits by seniors Chris Viltz (triple) and Christian Kaiser (double).  However, Dunlap stranded Kaiser at second and worked a shutout seventh to keep the game in striking distance and eventually earn the win.  Junior Jamie Wallace took the loss, allowing 3 runs (1 earned) in 1/3 of an inning.

The Kangs will practice Friday before hitting the field for their jamborees on Saturday.  Both the Varsity and JV travel to Island Crest Park to take on Mercer Island and Garfield at noon.  Meanwhile, the sophomore team will start their season, hosting Eastlake at 1:00 pm at LWHS.
