White
Tops Purple 12-1 in Annual Intrasquad Game
Seniors Evan Wilson and Nick Pizzuto each had two hits and tossed two scoreless innings
in leading the White team to a 12-1 victory over the Purple team in the 2007
Purple-White intrasquad game. The contest, which usually takes place on the
Saturday after tryouts, was played over two beautiful spring-like days on
Monday and Tuesday. Pizzuto
started the game for White and picked up the win (spring training rules), working
the first two frames allowing just a walk while striking out two. The White team got on the board in the second
inning when Wilson’s double to left scored sophomore Eric Folkers
from second base. Junior Chris Hashimoto
followed with a double of his own, plating Wilson and giving White a lead they
would never relinquish.
After the Purple squad responded with a run
on Nick Clayton’s (‘08) sacrifice fly in the top half of the third, White
extended their lead, scoring three runs in each of the next two frames. Sophomore Chris Viltz
doubled home junior Bryan May to start the scoring in the third, and
consecutive RBI singles by seniors Pizzuto and Kirby
Young capped the scoring in the frame.
In the fourth, Evan Wilson drove in two more runs with a single to left
field and sophomore Tyler Staudacher drove in a run
of his own with a single. Two more runs
came home in the 6th on senior Will McKenney’s
majestic triple to left-center field, which would have been out of nearly every
field in the state. White finished up
with two runs in the ninth, as senior Nate Sadler got into the act, driving
home a run with a triple of his own.
Senior Josh Rosser took the loss for the
Purple, allowing 2 earned runs on 4 hits over his two innings of work. Rosser struck out four and also had the only
extra base hit for the Purple squad; a double in the 8th inning. The story of the day was the pitching of the
White team, which allowed just 3 hits and 1 run over 9 innings of work, racking
up 12 strikeouts along the way. McKenney, Curtis Howell (’08), Andy Moser (’09) and Clayton
Truex (’09) threw scoreless innings of their own on
top of the four shutout frames tossed by Pizzuto and
Wilson.
The Kangs will practice the rest of the week
in preparation for their jamborees, which take place this Saturday afternoon. The jamboree opponents will again be the
Redmond Mustangs and Eastside Catholic Crusaders. The Varsity game will take place at noon at
Hartman Park in Redmond, while the JV’s will host the game at Lee Johnson Field
(Peter Kirk) starting at 4:00 pm.
